The 3.9 magnitude tremor struck six miles beneath a major shipping route at 7:59 a.m. according to a report in the Daily Mirror. This earthquake was the strongest in the area for nearly 300 years. Its epicentre was 53 miles south-east of Portsmouth and buildings shook as far away as Shoreham, West Sussex and Brighton, East Sussex. According to the Daily Mirror report one Twitter user posted, “I think there was just an earthquake in Worthing.
