An earthquake under the English Channel rocked the South Coast on Thursday, July 14th. The 3.9 magnitude tremor struck six miles beneath a major shipping route at 7:59 a.m. according to a report in the Daily Mirror.
This earthquake was the strongest in the area for nearly 300 years. Its epicentre was 53 miles south-east of Portsmouth and buildings shook as far away as Shoreham, West Sussex and Brighton, East Sussex. According to the Daily Mirror report one Twitter user posted, “I think there was just an earthquake in Worthing. I haven’t had any coffee yet, so it could just be my brain making things up (again).”
David Kerridge from the British Geological Survey said, “This is the largest earthquake in this area since a 4.5 magnitude quake in 1734 the article reported.
