You could certainly be correct. Unburned-or not fully burned-fragments of SOMETHING can be seen in the pics. Powder? Wad(TP)? Fragmented potato? Some of each? Unknown at this time.

Keep in mind that this cannon had never been fired before the Mt. and loads remain entirely experimental.
