Vietnam vet to head state agency

(EXCERPT) Jim Willis also served as a law enforcement officer for
about three decades in Oregon.

A veteran of the Vietnam War and law enforcement is the new director
of the Oregon Department of Veterans Affairs.

Jim Willis was named Thursday by Gov. Ted Kulongoski as the
replacement for Jon Mangis, who stepped down Sept. 1 after 18 years in
the position. Willis will continue as acting director until the Senate
confirms his appointment, probably at its next meeting Nov. 6.

“As a decorated Vietnam veteran and a longtime public servant, Jim
brings four decades of dedication and experience to his new role,”
Kulongoski said in a written statement.

Willis, 60, will run a department that the Legislature created just
two years after he was born. In addition to providing counseling and
claims service to military veterans, their dependents and survivors,
the agency also oversees home and farm loans.
