Vietnam Memorial Center Bill Passed

WASHINGTON -- A bill to create an underground visitor center near the
Vietnam Memorial heads to President Bush for his expected signature
after the House passed the measure Thursday.

Like the wall itself, the center's exhibits would focus on the people
who died rather than the divisiveness of the war. Under legislation
passed by voice vote, leaders of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund
would be tasked with raising money for design and construction and
deciding what goes inside.

To give faces and stories to some of the 58,000 names engraved on the
black granite wall, fund leaders plan to display veterans' photos and
some of the 64,000 items left at the memorial over the years.
