A US marine has been charged with the alleged assault of a Sydney sex worker over the weekend.
Police allege the 25-year-old man assaulted the woman in a Potts Point brothel shortly before 8pm on Sunday.
Detectives from Kings Cross local area command began making inquiries after the woman made a complaint to police that night, a spokesman said.
Police said the 25-year-old marine from USS Peleliu, which docked in Sydney on Friday, attended Kings Cross police station about 3pm yesterday, where he was arrested and questioned for several hours.
Late last night, police charged the man with assault with intent to have sexual intercourse and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was bailed to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on Monday 10 November 2008.
In another incident, police are appealing for witnesses after a marine was punched in the face in Kings Cross on Sunday morning, leaving him with a fractured skull and other head injuries.
The 23-year-old corporal was on the road, near the intersection of Roslyn Street and Barncleuth Lane, and blocking the path of a medium-sized sedan, police said.
The driver beeped and the marine was moved off the road by a passer-by, police said. But a passenger got out from the car and punched the marine, police said. He was in a serious but stable condition at St Vincent's Hospital.
The Peleliu, an amphibious assault ship, has 260 officers and 2500 enlisted men and women, including 1300 marines. "You'll find they're lions in time of war and lambs in time of peace. So, hopefully, they'll get along with everybody," Colonel Brian Beaudreault said on Friday.
