During a Union Army occupation of Harpers Ferry, a contingent of soldiers from Marlborough, Massachusetts removed a bell hanging in the Harpers Ferry arsenal firehouse. The Harpers Ferry firehouse had served as John Brown's Fort. Several of those from Marlborough were in the fire department in Marlborough, called the "'Torrent' Fire/engine Company", according to the city of Marlborough website. They took the bell back to Marlborough where it has remained ever since. Harpers Ferry has made some attempts over the years to retrieve the bell, none of them successful.
