Here's another variation of the origin of "Yankee". When England took over the Dutch colonies in New Amsterdam (soon to be called New York), they derisively called the Dutch who stayed there, "Jan Kees". "Jan" (pronounced "yawn") being Dutch for John and "Kees" is Dutch for cheese, so the Dutch were referred to as "John Keyes" which was eventually shortened to "Yankees".
