Update:
Conditions are deteriorating pretty fast now. Much more wave action in the bayous, which is taking out some private wooden docks and piers. Storm surge is now about 4 or 5 feet.
Boats anchored offshore are riding pretty well, but boats tied up at piers are being battered against the piers and damaged.
A Coast Guard unit off Pensacola has reported waves in the Gulf of 50-60 feet in height.
The concrete pier I mentioned earlier is about 30 to 40 feet wide and a hundred yards out into the Gulf. The pilings are massive...square pilings about 6 feet in diameter. Not sure how thick the pier bed itself is. Looks like about 50 feet of the end of the pier is gone. I would estimate that the amount of concrete in the missing piece is about the size of one of the concrete German bunkers on Normandy beach.
