Keep her name alive..
There is an effort being made by former shipmates of the USS AMERICA CV(A)-66 to have the next carrier named the USS America (II). There is also a recently formed group on Yahoo for the America: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CVA-66...yguid=82741423
Member at this group ask that you wirte to members of the governmet to let them know we want another USS America!

It could work, there is nothing like public influence on a beuracrat and Washington is filled with them.
So here is a list of those who may have some influence on
naming the next carrier the USS AMERICA II for her history,
being the "Nation's Flagship" and especially for her sacrafice
for the carriers of the future in her slow death next month.
It is now the tradition to name all CVN's after past Presidents
of the United States. What better way to encapsulate all the
Presidents into one ship and be the representative to the world
of the US's mighty military force than to reserrect the ship by
name only and allow her to sail the seas once more. What would
also be nice is if they could put the America's bell, which is now on the JFK on the "NEW" AMERICA so that a piece of her will be living on her new decks.
If we get enough public interest in this it just might work.
Talk to the media, tell your friends, send letters, send email,
whatever it takes to keep the name of the USS AMERICA forever
spoken throughout the land.
Here is the person that is ultimately responsible for approving
the names of all ships in the NAVY:
The Honorable Gordon R. England
Secretary of the Navy
1000 Navy Pentagon
Washington, D.C. 20350-1000
If you can find the email address for Gorgon England would you
please forward it to me?

Congressman Weldon was at the ceremony on Feb. 25 and was
very instrumental in making sure the Dept. of the Navy would
not interfere with the ceremony any further. He may be very
instrumental on getting the next ship named the AMERICA. He
is on a Congressional Miliatry Subcommittee and could be a
good advocate for our cause.
