At least 63 cars were smashed up and dozens of people injured in a chain-reaction crash on a major interstate in Virginia Sunday morning, according to authorities.
Dramatic photos showed Interstate 64 in York County almost completely jammed with the damaged vehicles that made the highway look more like a junkyard.
At least 35 people were taken to hospitals for treatment, with injuries ranging from minor wounds to some that were life-threatening, Virginia State Police said in online messages.
As of early Sunday afternoon, there had been no fatalities, police said.
The crash is believed to have been sparked by ice and heavy fog, police said.
Eastbound lanes eventually reopened, but westbound lanes remained closed hours after the crash, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
An investigation was ongoing, and motorists were being asked to avoid the area.
