Cyber Command has a new deputy commander to help as the organization continues to define itself as an unified combatant command.

Vice Adm. Ross Myers was named deputy commander of U.S. Cyber Command May 27, approximately one year after he was named the organization’s chief of staff. At the same time, Myers earned his third star.

Myers first joined Cyber Command as the director of plans and policy in July 2017 before being promoted to chief of staff in May 2018.

A career naval aviator, Myers has led at the squadron, air wing and carrier strike group level. He has also served as the deputy director for Joint Staff Global Operations, executive assistant to the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as the vice deputy director for nuclear, homeland defense and current operations.

Cyber Command’s deputy position has been vacant since Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart retired earlier this year. Stewart had held the position since 2017. During his tenure Stewart shared some duties with then-Cyber Command Deputy Director Lt. Gen. William Mayville as part of a special arrangement to help the command navigate its elevation to the 10th combatant command. That situation was temporary, and Mayville submitted his retirement papers after just eight months on the job.

Myers appointment as the next deputy commander was expected. He was confirmed by the Senate on May 23, and the Department of Defense has already announced that Army Maj. Gen. John Morrison would be named the new chief of staff.
