The History International channel just had a show about the AK and its designer. Its been around for a long time and, unless someone comes up with a better idea, it will continue to be around. One thing they did mention in the show is that the design has been copied by several manufacturers who took shortcuts making it a very affordable weapon, but those tend to break down rather quickly. The AKs make by the orginal manufacturer are still the best.
I had an opportunity to buy a Russian made semi-auto-only AK complete with two 30-round clips, bayonet, and 300 rounds of ammo for only $300. I turned it down...damnit!
