At one point during the battle, British general Peckenham and his staff watched as a buckskin clad American climbed on top of the defensive works and took at them with his rifle. They laughed at the thought that the American actually thought he could hit one of them at that distance. They saw him fire, then one of the general's aides went down. It so astonished them that they didn't move as they watched the marksman reload. He fired again and another aide went down. They then decided that withdrawal to a safer distance might be prudent, so they did, with a newfound respect for American marksmanship.
