Memorial Day - Observed May 28th
In 1865 a druggist named C. Welles, in New York, mentioned to his friends at a social
gathering that while praising the living veterans of the Civil War, it would also be a good idea
to remember the patriotic dead who perished in the war and place flowers on their graves. A
ceremony was held in May 1866, and from such humble beginnings sprang our current
Memorial Day holiday.
