During medieval times, knights would wear large codpieces on their armor, partly to protect the family jewels, but also to "impress" the ladies. I saw Henry VIII's armor and his codpiece stood out almost 6"! However, I found out that Hank had syphilis and the extra room made for less irritation on the irritation.

Even when wearing their "civies", men would wear a horsehair stuffed "jockstrap", again, for the ladies.
