I have long contended that absent the discovery of oil in the Middle East, that intellectual and aesthetic backwater would still be wallowing in their 13th century sandbox. They would still be having tribal wars over a water hole, still acquiring their wives via barter and opportunism (wait, they're still doing that!), and still be cooking their butchered goat over camel-dung fires. A country or a culture is gauged by what accomplishments they leave behind, looking back several generations into the past. For this reason today, the phrase "the greatest generation" aptly describes those fading warriors who stood in the breach, who stemmed the tide, who wrapped their collective arms around decent civilization and protected them. No such phrase or contribution can be found in all Islam.
