I don't want to rain on your parade, and I would guess your guy is just as you say, That being said, I have seen medivac refused to come into a LZ, I have see Gun ships refuse low level attacks. I guess that is self preservation , but, we sure could have used their help.
Now credit is dew were credit is dew. I thanked God more than one time for a gun ship that showed up and asked for smoke. And more than a few times I loaded wounded onto a medivac as AK rounds hit next to the door gunner. You will never forget the sound of a AK round hitting a huey.
