You caught the reason I wrote this post in the first place, exactly.
Occasionally one will hear figures the USA has deployed 370,000 military in 120 countries today. I am not at all certain of the figures, but they are repeated at times. Also, I do not know if that includes stateside garrisons, guard and/or reserves. Except for those of us who are tuned directly into defense appropriations and weapons/equipment R&D, few have any way of knowing which systems our people need support for either.
Where the people and supplies might be used next is the question, and the cold war, if not ended, has heated up considerably in the recent several years... as you point out.
$4 billion monthly for Iraq, in this light, seems to be quite a lot of money for an open-ended campaign.
