The German submarine that was carrying the blueprints for Japan's jet aircraft
was sunk by the British off Norway, I believe.
The jet aircraft of that era were primitive and used massive amounts of fuel.
The could carry only enough fuel to quickly rise to altitude, make a couple of passes, and back down again.
