Japan's ability to wage war could have been ended without the A-bombs or an invasion.
But it would have meant isolating the Japanese mainland and the starvation of many times the number of Japanese civilians than were victims of the A-bombs.
Millions of Japanese would have starved to death before the government surrendered.
I do NOT think the bombs should have been used on civilian targets.
