The Brits went out of their way in their abysmal inhumane treatment of POW's. The problem was, Americans were considered rebels and not opposing soldiers, therefore, in the "grand" English tradition, they were subjected to cruelty that was reserved for rebels. For example; Americans imprisoned in the rotting hulks of ships in New York and Charleston harbors were given food that any normal person would have rejected; rotten meat, weevil infested bread hard enough to drive nails, little or no vegatables, etc. This they had to cook themselves, not in fresh water, but in sea water that polluted with their own excrement. Its no wonder that most of them died.
