Default Operation Malheur I

This was the first operation carried out by Task Force Oregon. Task Force Oregon was a division-sized unit put together in APR67. It consisted of 196th Light Infantry Brigade, the 3rd brigade of the 25th Infantry Division, and the 1st brigade [the only brigade in-country at the time] of the 101st Airborne Division. The 3rd brigade of the 25th ID would later be redesignated as the 3rd brigade of the 4th ID.

Task Force Oregon was put together to take over the Quang Ngai Province AO, the southern-most part of I Corps. This would free up the Marines in the AO to return further north with the rest of the Marines, and for the 1st Cav to secure Highway 1 all the way to Danang.

On the 11MAY67 we [101st Abn. Div.] made a CA into the mountains west of Duc Pho. The whole brigade would be inserted into the mountains in less than 48hrs. The mountains had been a VC stronghold for a long time. It was a dangerous place; heavily mined and booby trapped and Charlie had many basecamps and weapons caches in the area. Most of the population in the area were either active VC or VC sympathizers. We made contact almost immediately, taking casualties. We would remain in the mountains for about a month-and-a-half.

Task Force Oregon would stay intact until late '67 when the 198th LIB and the 11th Infantry Brigade got in-country to join the 196th LIB to form the Americal Division. Their headquarters would be Chu Lai.
