That was great strategy by the Brits; march in straight lines without proper artillery support up a steep hill against a fortified position. They did try a flanking action by sending the Light infantry around the right flank along the Mystic River beach but they were met by John Stark's NH militia. The Brits left over 90 dead on that beach. Why they didn't use their field guns there is beyond me.
Later, in 1777, John Stark led a combined NH and VT militia against Gentleman Johnny Burgoyne's Hessians at Bennington, VT; kicked the hell out of them, too.
