Yep - the Japanese did some terrible things during WWII. What they did to the women in the Philippines was pretty bad. When I was there a Japanese ship broke down and they wanted to dock at Subic Bay for repairs. All hell broke loose when they heard a Japanese ship was being allowed into the bay. They were restricted to their ship and could not go a ashore.
The PI posted small boats around the ship with weapons and told their skipper anyone from that ship got on shore they would be shot immediately. They hated the Japanese and I don't blame them for what they did when they invaded in WWII - tortured their women and killed many Philippines's to which they never forgot! They love big cane knives and would chop them up if they put a foot on their shores.
