17 more perish in Karachi violence

Tuesday, December 02, 2008 By Salis bin Perwaiz Karachi: Seventeen people, including a police officer and an MQM activist, were killed in the spate of violence in the city on Monday. Despite orders to ‘shoot on sight’, several shops, stalls, vehicles and godowns were torched in various parts of the city as violence continued for a third straight day. Karachi’s defunct West Zone remains the most troubled area in the city, the DIG of which was transferred on Monday. Moreover, the home minister said that he has now given the shoot-on-sight orders in writing. Intelligence sources said that the city was still in the grip of anti-social elements, but the authorities still had no inkling as to who is behind the recent spate of violence.
