A whole lot of people paid for our freedom with their blood and suffering, a small part of which I witnessed personally. I owe it to them to be the best American I can be. We have fought many wars against people deluded by demagogues and it saddens me to see the same thing happening here. We would not be the first people to sell our liberty for a feeling of smug self-righteous certainty. I just always felt we were above that somehow. It is a shame the Greatest Generation is being followed by the worst but I believe that will be our legacy.
