During the course of the battle many Brits soldiers tried to take cover behind fallen trees but were beaten back into open formations by their officers using the flat of their swords. Yep, nothing like wearing red coats with white cross belts and standing out in the open; talk about easy targets. The colonial militias suffered proportionately fewer casualties simply because they fought Indian style. I read of one account where a British officer tried to get a militia company to stand in the open like the Brit regulars but they threatened to shoot him and he went back to what remained of his company.
