General of The Army Douglas MacArthur once said: "Old soldiers never
die... they just simply fade away." Our national history reveals that
after every American war those who possessed the courage to brave
battles and endure the unendurable have, historically, been 'put out
to pasture'... ignored, sometimes (particularly after Vietnam) even
ridiculed. American war and peace-time veterans have always largely
been contemporaneously ignored... save for Memorial and Veterans Day.

Douglas MacArthur's words were true in the era he spoke them at his
retirement announcement before the United States congress... and
repeated before a graduating class of the United States Military
Academy led by future Vietnam War CINC LtGenl William C. Westmoreland.
His memorable words are recalled by every graduating class at the
Academy... but ignored by our fellow citizens.
