(EXCERPT) As a cub reporter, John Sergeant saw a country battered by a

I am on my way to Vietnam to make a film about the brilliantly funny
war novel Catch-22. Those who have read it will find it difficult to
resist pointing out that Joseph Heller set the book in Italy at the
end of the second world war, and does not mention Vietnam. But that is
the kind of defeatist talk I am not prepared to listen to at the
moment.

I am looking down over the Mekong Delta; the great S-bends of the
river west of Saigon have stuck firmly in my mind since I was last
here, in 1972, as a BBC reporter on my first foreign assignment. I am
apprehensive about what I have to do. Then, I was worried about
whether I would be brave enough to report the war; now, I am concerned
