Unhappy Bye-bye Fellas

A Salute to Bill Mauldin

Now, don?t go getting elated just yet - ?I?M NOT LEAVING!!? I am rather just lamenting the departure of a genuine giant!!

Two time Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, BILL MAULDIN, has departed for that ?Giant Sketch-Pad In The Skies!? So don?t be at all surprised if you look up at the clouds some day and find that you can make out the outlines of ?Willie and Joe!!?

Mauldin, An Army Grunt (rifleman) in World War II himself, after spending the war years ?Telling It Like It Was? through the eyes of his immortal cartoon characters (Willie and Joe), has gone on to truly bigger and better things!

Willie and Joe, two hard-pressed and always under fire GIs, eternally bogged down in the heat and tedium of WW2, brought some poignant humor to life in the foxhole! And to anyone who ever served upon one of the three major fronts of World War II (Europe/Africa, Asia/Pacific, and the Ever-Ready Home Front), Willie and Joe was as big a fact of life as was the Ration Card itself! Bill Mauldin truthfully portrayed the day by day trials and tribulations of war, and then added a twinkle to it!

Mauldin?s body itself may be gone, but for as long as any man or woman darns the uniform of our nation, ?Old Bill? will forever be peering over their shoulder!

VERITAS MR. MAULDIN
