Default Dyer's Hamburgers..have used same grease since 1912

This place is very different. When they opened up their location in Bartlett, TN. they had a police escort to move part of the ancient grease they use. ( Note : they claim it is cleaned from time to time....but who knows ? ) For years they didn't serve fries. And they never serve tomato and lettuce on their burgers. They have had triple-triple burgers for a long time. 3 pieces of meat and 3 pieces of cheese. They now have a four-by-four. Four pieces of each. I had one tonight. Very good, with extra onions. Anything like this where you live ?

Dyer's Burgers

Who knew 91-year-old grease made such great burgers? This diner cooks food the old-fashioned way.

205 Beale St
Memphis, TN 38103-3128
Phone (901) 527-3937

The Scene

Neon lights brighten this one-room diner, highlighting the chrome bar and the green and red color scheme. Patrons admire pictures of old Memphis and the great view of bustling Beale Street.

The Food

Dyer's uses the same grease that Elmer Dyer (the original owner) used to cook his burgers back in 1912. This ultra-resourceful use of bacon grease--and the savory burgers it helps to create--has turned Dyer's into an urban legend. The patties are thin, and you can order a single, double or triple burger along with one, two or three slices of cheese. Dressed with mustard, onion and pickles, the burgers practically melt in your mouth. Dyer's also serves chicken sandwiches, ribs, hot wings, hot dogs, red beans and rice, and nachos.

I remember a place in Worcester, MA, a real greasy spoon diner my friends and I went to one night after playing in a men's league hockey game. I was going to ask for a burger until I watched the "cook" as he was frying some up. He was this huge guy wearing a "wife-beater" stained by what appeared to be decades of old grease and food spatters, bald with a severe 5 o'clock shadow, smoking a cigar, the ashes falling onto the grill. As he cooked the burgers, the sweat was pouring off his head and landing on the burgers. THAT was a sure-fire appetite f*cker! I settled on a cup of coffee that I swear had an oil slick that looked like the one caused by the Exxon Valdez. What really amazed me was that the place was jammed! It was the last time I went there.

There was, however, a place I frequented while stationed at Norton AFB in San Bernardino, "The Kozy Korner". It was a little 2X4 bar and grille right across the street from the base. It had only 4 tables and about 20 stools facing an "L" shaped bar. For a buck you got a 1/4# cheeseburger with onions, lettuce and tomatoes, jalapeno peppers on the side, a bag of chips and an 8oz glass of beer. Quite the deal! As a plus, the barmaid was, shall we say, VERY accomodating and had a cot out back. That joint still holds a warm spot in my...heart.

I hear the Varsity in Atlanta,Ga up around where Sid and the LT live has a tastey burger. One day I will have to go try one . I do like the patter they have "have your money in your hand and what you want on your mind" makes the ordering process go fast I have heard from Turner South cable channel special on "Liars and Legends".

I got to go thru The Varsity while in Atlanta for a baseball card show in 1978. Fantastic place. Don't miss it if you are in town.

Ks hamburger joint in Troy Ohio. My home town.

It was there when I was born, and still in the same location and busy as heck. My bros still go there every once in a while.

There is two grills approxmately 6 ft long and I can say I dont beleive they ever change the grease from the burgers, cause it runs off into a barrell under the grills, and they use it the next day to restart the grill.

In reality, I guess you could say they change the grease cause of the new grease from the burgers, but what the heck, they are delicious.

Also serve a good Frosty and fries.

There is also a Burger joint on the way to Eldora Speedway that we use to stop at before going into the races. It was a drive through, and when you get to the window to order, there was a world full of used chewing gum stuck on the outside wall. Made you sick to look at it, but it didnt bother the customers.

enough..........
