![]() Without a doubt Veterans day.
Though lately so many of these days even Veterans day is looked at just as a day to get off work and out of school(they were out here yesterday.) |

![]() Depends on the person you ask and there background. Some in gov might say presidents day some may say veterans day, If you ask a vet he/she will probibly say I don't give a shit. But then that could be just me.

![]() Sadly, what we used to celebrate as George Washington's birthday, or Abraham Lincoln's birthday, men of tried and true character, leadership and integrity, as genuine heroes of our past. It was a school holiday, and we knew why we were celebrating. Our past has been dumbed down, or worse, demonized, and so President's Day is nothing more than a trivialization of the office, and some of the great men who have served there.
Having said all that, without veterans, and the sacrifices they have made and continue to make even as we speak, we wouldn't even have a President's Day. And I don't like how even this holy day has been trivialized. I just came back from a ceremony where we honored all vets, from WWII onward to Iraq. My son, a vet from the Panama campaign, and my best friend, one of my troops from Vietnam tour #1 was there as I had the honor of introducing the guest speaker.

![]() My vote would be Veterans Day and it to be kept on Nov 11th unless it fell on Sunday then they could make the following Monday an off day but not to change the official Date of 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th Month.
Today I had the opportunity to take part in the Veterans Day program at my gransons middle school here in Nahunta,GA . The kids put on a great program 20 kids read poems and stories about the Veterans in the family. A young man sang Lee Greenwoods song "Proud to be an American"and later we were given a tour of the school and Dinner was provided for all Veterans in Apreciation for their Service ! I found out school chow hadn't changed much in 23 years either.Every one enjoyed their visit with the 7th and 8th graders and as one of the WW2 vets stated these kids are doing great and he was proud of them! ![]()

![]() I have worked in the private industrial and engineering sector my entire career and have never got a day off for either remembrance. Or for that matter had anyone at work ever walked up and say happy Veterans Day, ever. The most surprising thing that ever happened to me was in the UK. At the time two of the contractor management Brits (more less the bosses) grabbed me up as I came through the gate to the power plant and took me canal boating for the day. Those inland canal boats are about 40 ft. long and maybe six foot wide and part of the deal is to open and close the locks as ya go along the canal, super interesting experience. It was around the 4th of July, 1988 and I didn?t know what to say or how to react so I just went with the flow and what a great day. So many of the Brit power plant guys were former Royal Navy and I think I did a good gob of circulating and swapping sea stories, especially with the key guys like the overhead crane operators, senior mill rights, mechanics, electricians and the like that maybe that avoided some Labor disputes, I don?t know. The management Brits that took me on the canal boating deal were both former Royal Air Force Pilots and stogy as all hell around Labor Union types that I had to work with and get help from. But then everyone in the UK is in a Labor Union by law so as a dumb as Yank ya just put on the happy face and sell, sell, sell yourself to make a project work. God help the poor Yank that get snippy, snooty or arrogant in a project like a power plant referb in the UK. Before ya know it, the Labor Unions on site will get about ?working the rule? and some Yank is going to get asked to leave the premises, period. I?ve seen it happen, you bet. Oops, I?m drifting.
Getting back to the question, I believe it?s a personal thing and I?ll always remember Veterans Day but Presidents day just comes and goes and unless someone tells me, it?s just another day, no big deal. We have had some former Presidents that aren?t worth honoring and some that are, but that?s a personal call as well. Scamp
