SECOND INDOCHINA WAR:
January 22, 1966 (2nd day of the 1st month, Year of the Horse) (US Counteroffensive): Helicopter extraction of 12 recon troops five miles northeast of Ba To in I Corps.

January 1967 (11th and 12th months, Year of the Horse) (US Counteroffensive Phase II)(AR Online): The 116th Assault Helicopter Company during the month of January established an all time record for total hours flown by an airmobile company in the 12th Combat Aviation Group. The 3048 flying hours erased the previous 12th Group high. The 116th Hornets commanded by Maj. James H. Patterson, established their record breaking performance while supporting every major unit in the III Corps area. Missions were also flown for MACV, USAID, II FFV the 1st Australian Task Force and numerous ARVN units.

January 22, 1968 (23rd day of the 12th month, Year of the Goat)(US Counteroffensive Phase III): Operation Pershing II begins in Binh Dinh Province.

January 22, 1968 (23rd day of the 12th month, Year of the Goat)(US Counteroffensive Phase III): Operation Jeb Stuart begins in I Corps.

January 22, 1968 (23rd day of the 12th month, Year of the Goat)(US Counteroffensive Phase III): Operation Ballistic Armor begins in I Corps.

January 22, 1968 (23rd day of the 12th month, Year of the Goat)(US Counteroffensive Phase III) (PS&S): All 41 passengers aboard the Marines CH53 that crashed in Thua Thien Province are reported to be dead.

January 22, 1968 (23rd day of the 12th month, Year of the Goat) (US Counteroffensive Phase III) (PSS): Three pilots shot down over North Vietnam are rescued.

January 22, 1968 (23rd day of the 12th month, Year of the Goat) (US Counteroffensive Phase III) (PSS): Flying Cranes airlift bulldozers to forward fire support bases.

January 22, 1968 (23rd day of the 12th month, Year of the Goat) (US Counteroffensive Phase III): A/7/17 Cavalry sees action and takes casualties in Pleiku Province.

January 22, 1968 (23rd day of the 12th month, Year of the Goat) (US Counteroffensive Phase III): Khe Sanh: B52 strikes against four enemy locations announce the start of Operation NIAGARA, a joint Air Force, Navy and Marine operation to provide massive air support for Khe Sanh, while C-123 Providers unload 8000 pounds of ammunition from Da Nang at the base during the afternoon. Airstrip lights having been destroyed by the previous day's shelling, the landing strip is lit with flares during darkness.

Lt. Colonel Mitchell's 1/9 arrives at the base and takes up positions which encompass rock quarry southwest of combat base. E/2/26 is relocated from Hill 558 to prominent ridgeline northeast of 861 as covering force for flank of 2/26; E/2/26 passes to operational control of 3rd Battalion. New position is called 861 Alpha.

January 22, 1969 (5th day of the 12th month, Year of the Monkey) (US Counteroffensive Phase VI): Operation Dawson River South starts in Da Krong Valley.

January 22, 1969 (5th day of the 12th month, Year of the Monkey) (US Counteroffensive Phase VI): Operation Dewey Canyon begins in the A Shau Valley.
