Well before the big band era, Henry Busse came to America from Germany, and in due time organized a band in San Francisco with Paul Whiteman. Busse was the musicial director and Whiteman, the conductor. It is generally acknowledged that Henry Busse was the original creative force behind the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, which became the forerunner of the big bands and helped spawn the careers of such members as Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Jack Teagarden, Johnny Mercer and Bing Crosby. Around 1930 Henry Busse formed his own band and had hit recordings of songs such as "Hot Lips," "When Day Is Done," "Jade," and "Wang Wang Blues." Busse's bands remained popular until his death in the 1950s. Considering the roles he and his band played in the big band era, it is quite fitting that his band be an integral part of the show When Swing Was Swing. He played at Eastwood Amusement Park, 8 Mile & Gratiot.
