Default Veterans' Day

Remember

Written by Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC

It was the Veteran, not the reporter,
who has given us the freedom of the press.

It was the Veteran, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It was the Veteran, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to fair trial.

It was the Veteran, not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Veteran, who salutes the flag,
who served under the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protestor to burn the flag.

To REMEMBER is to HONOR!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

HAPPY VETERANS DAY TO ALL VETERANS!!

Rick & Brenda

Default Armistice Day

Veteran:

Derived from the Latin and French "veteranus", an adjective, or noun, depending on usage.

Meaning; one grown old and skilled through experience, attained to competence through long practise (as of military life), prolonged service to country, steadiness, seasoned by intensity to help novices, or a tree over two feet in diameter breast high.

There are approximately 24,900,000 living veterans in America today.

"Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day in commemoration of the signing of the Armistice ending World War I, is the anniversary of the ending of World War I. In the United States it is celebrated as a federal holiday on 11 November. According to the VA website, the major hostilities ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Armistice Day was first commemorated by President Wilson in 1919, and many states made it a legal holiday. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 inviting all Americans to observe the day, and made it a legal holiday nationwide in 1938. The holiday has been observed annually on November 11 since that date - first as Armistice Day, later as Veterans Day - except for a brief period when it was celebrated on the fourth Monday of October.

Following World War II, the name of the holiday was changed (enacted 1 June 1954) to Veterans Day to honor those who served in all American wars. The day has since evolved to primarily be a time of honoring living veterans who have served in the military during wartime or peacetime, partially due to competition with Memorial Day, which primarily honors the dead.

Many nations within the British Commonwealth observe a similar occasion, Remembrance Day, on 11 November."

Remember Folks most "Golden Corral" restaurants are advertising free dinners to Veterans on Monday the 14th so if your local Golden Corral has the promotion have a good evening meal with them and the other Veterans gathering there for dinner. To them and all Veterans

Jerry,

How do they know if you're a vet? Do you have to show your DD214 or something?

Any kind of military ID, VFW/AL/DAV membership card, 214, even an old shot record or similar will work. One guy here brought in a photo of himself in uniform, that worked too.
