New Study of Herbicide Spraying by US Forces in Vietnam: Analysis of newly acquired data has enabled Stellman, et. al. to provide an updated picture of the volume and extent of herbicide spraying during the Vietnam conflict (1961-1971). In an article published in Nature (vol 422, 17 April 2003, p. 681), the authors conclude that previous estimates from the National Academy of Sciences 1974 study must be revised upwards. Since the volume and location of spraying are known in much greater detail, the authors conclude that detailed epidemiological studies of the long-term effects of exposure of both Vietnamese civilains and US military personnel to defoliants are now feasible. On the accompanying image, Volumes of herbicide sprayed. a, b and c represent known volumes of Agents Orange, White and Blue, respectively, sprayed by US military forces in RVN, 1961?1971. d, Grids sprayed with volumes greater than 4,800l (about 10% of total), with marker size increasing in proportion to volume and colours corresponding to herbicide codenames. All herbicides containing 2,4,5-T are represented by orange markers.
