Real POW?
I don't know. - Greg
------- "In other Pekin Veterans Day events, retired Air Force Maj. Gen. John Borling wowed onlookers at Pekin's "Five Points" intersection with stories about his imprisonment during the Vietnam War at Hanoi. Borling, a Rockford resident who is running for the U.S. Senate, recalled the time he learned of America's first successful trip to the moon. In 1970, while imprisoned and sifting through his fellow prisoner's mail, Borling saw a postal stamp with an astronaut on the moon. The first moon landing occurred in 1969. "I left (for Vietnam) when my baby was 3 months old," said Borling, a Republican. "When I came home … my child was 7½ years old." http://www.pjstar.com/news/topnews/b1a0ggq9053.html |

Borling (USAF - RET) National Project Consultant A retired Air Force General, John Borling's military career spanned 37 years, including graduation from the Air force Academy. As one of our most highly decorated Air Force officers, General Borling was an F-15 Eagle fighter pilot and Commander of the "Hat in the Ring," America's most famous squadron. He was Director of Operations for the Strategic Air Command's support in the Gulf War and in Panama, and was Chief of CHECKMATE, a highly classified think tank at the Pentagon. General Borling commanded the fighter and support base outside NATO's Supreme Headquarters in Belgium, working directly for the Supreme Commander and Chief of Staff. He has piloted many strategic and tactical aircraft including the F4 Phantom, the SR71 Blackbird, the U-2 and the B-52 and B-1 bombers. During the Vietnam War, he spent over 6 ½ years as a POW in Hanoi. He was a White House Fellow and Treasurer and Director of the governing foundation. As the Chief of Staff of NATO’s Headquarters North and Senior U.S. Officer in Scandinavia, his final military assignment was the creation of an integrated NATO and Norwegian National Command in Stavanger, Norway. >------- > >"In other Pekin Veterans Day events, retired Air Force Maj. Re: Real POW?
Borling, John L.; USAF O2 (shootdown rank); lost 1 June 1966; F4C; over
North Vietnam. Returned at Operation Homecoming, 12 Feb 73. The other guy in the F4 was Myers, Armand J; USAF O3; also returned 12 Feb 73. I recall the story about the moon landing stamp. Don't recall if another returnee told it to me or if it's in "Honor Bound." -- ---- Joe S. I like my senators to be damned good politicians. Gen. Borling is worthy of all the honor we can give, but that does not mean a seat in Congress. ted > > |
