Opinion: Iraq: Another Vietnam disaster?

I was heartened to read my friend Richard Mack's guest column in
Wednesday's newspaper.

Headlined "A Pyrrhic victory looms for U.S. in Iraq," it was a good
piece of writing. Dick knows how to write. He's the author of "Memoir
of a Cold War Soldier," published two years ago, By Kent State
University Press.

When he talks about matters of the military and foreign policy, I
listen. He knows what he's talking about. He spent more than 30 years
in the Army, a distinguished career that included service during World
War II, the Korean War and two tours of duty in Vietnam. He's retired
and lives in Chalfont.

In his book, Mack, based on his considerable experience as a military
officer, comments on the lack of U.S. preparedness in Korea and the
flawed strategies of Vietnam, in addition to the military and
political uncertainties of the Cold War.

He knows about leadership, and the lack of it, so he possesses a
degree of credibility that most of us don't possess when voicing his
opinion about the current situation in Iraq.
