LETTERS FROM VIETNAM

ASHAWAY - David Kinney doesn't think there's anything special about
the work he was doing as a teenager in 1967-68. It was a job, he says,
but it isn't one he likes to talk about much.

"I haven't really thought about it much over the years, and I never
really said too much about it. It's one of those things you keep to
yourself," Kinney said.

Kinney's stepdaughter, Linda Arnold-Sylvia, disagrees with Kinney's
modesty. "Pop's" job was something about which she was always curious,
but was never able to coax many stories out of him.

The 55-year-old Alton native served in the Army's 84th Engineer
Battalion from December 1967 to December 1968 in Vietnam. When
Arnold-Sylvia learned that her Pop had all the letters he'd written to
his parents stashed in the back of a closet, she sneaked them out with
her mother's help.

On Memorial Day 2002, she presented Kinney with a thick book filled
with hundreds of letters home to his parents in Alton as a tribute.
