![]() Dr Cao Bao Van a young woman scientist of the Pasteur Institute in Ho
Chi Minh City jusr reported the successful identification of H5N1 avian virus gene affecting human a mere 4 days upon receiving the Samples. This is to compare with the results for DNA sequencing in US forensic labs of sample during criminal investigations requiring usually 1 week or more for results . This doesn't meant that Viekong scientists knew short cuts the US labs don't because most of the DNA identification technologies were discovered in USA but, presumably, because of the emergency caused by the Avian Virus epidemics, Vietnamese Scientists just have to work harder. The news was from Vnexpress which showed a quite attractive Picture of Dr Van , the map of the genes and a comment by the WHO scientist Dr Itamura who vouched to the quality and accuracy of Dr Van's work. With this highly complex technology now established in house, samples would not be sent to the CDC in Atlanta costing 10 times more and demanding several weeks for results. Human samples of patients suspected of infection with Avian Virus infection from different regions of Vietnam will be analyzed systematically to find out if HSN1 had undergone mutation or stayed the same thereby finding the epidemiology of the disease and the best way to control it. I am almost certain that the Pasteur Institute in Saigon which was sponsored by the World Class Pasteur Institute in Paris will soon become a reference laboratory in South East Asia analysing samples sent over by the 10 asian countries and possibly from China. Another mind boggling possibility is Dr Van and her colleagues both Vietnamese and from various labs of Europe, USA will develop an effective and cheap vaccine for the Avian Virus diseases within a few months. One of the treasure left by the Fench Colonialist was the Pasteur Institute which was staffed by World Class scientist at the time who discovered vaccine for the Plague.
