sacrifices. Our people are determined to fight on. We will endure all
sacrifice for ten years, 20 years or longer, until complete victory.
PREMIER PHAM VAN DONG Throughout Vietnam's history, this has always
been the case. It was so in the past, it will be so in the future.
This is something we can be sure of. GENERAL VO NGUYEN GIAP One of the
most essential -- if not to say the most essential -- rule in
Vietnam-ese military science, in war we have to win, absolutely have
to win. NARRATOR In October 1954, after nine years of war, French
troops left Hanoi. Ho Chi Minh had led the Communist-inspired Vietminh
nationalists to victory. A cease-fire agreement signed at Geneva
provisionally partitioned Vietnam into two zones. Ho's forces were to
regroup in the North and leave their families and unarmed comrades in
the South. A nation-wide election to reunify Vietnam was to be held in
two years. Colonial rule was ending. MME. NGUYEN THI DINH (National
