Unhappy Military Murders

Series of Slayings Shakes Fort Bragg Community
The Associated Press

F O R T B R A G G, N.C., July 26 ? A string of slayings involving the wives of Fort Bragg soldiers has raised concerns in this military community about the stress wartime deployments may be adding to already shaky marriages.

In the past six weeks, the wives of four Fort Bragg soldiers have been slain. In all four cases, investigators said, their husbands were the killers.

In three of the cases, the men were special operations soldiers who had been deployed to Afghanistan.

Fort Bragg officials say they are looking closely at all of the cases, trying to determine whether the hardships of military life contributed.

"One case of child abuse or spouse abuse or one homicide is one too many, and it's a continuous effort on all our parts to do as much as we can to prevent it from happening again," said Col. Tad Davis, Fort Bragg's garrison commander.

The string of family deaths started June 11. Fayetteville police said that was when Sgt. 1st Class Rigoberto Nieves ? a soldier in the 3rd Special Forces Group who had been back from Afghanistan just two days ? shot his wife, Teresa, and then himself in their bedroom.

Officials say Nieves had requested leave to resolve personal problems.

Sheriff's investigators said Jennifer Wright was strangled June 29. Her husband, Master Sgt. William Wright of the 96th Civil Affairs Battalion, reported her missing two days later. Then on July 19, he led investigators to her body in Hoke County and was charged with murder.

Wright, who had been back from Afghanistan for about a month, had moved out of his house and was living in the barracks.

?Very Much a Tragedy?

On the same day that Wright was arrested, Sgt. 1st Class Brandon Floyd shot his wife, Andrea, then killed himself in their Stedman home.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that Floyd was a member of Delta Force, the secretive anti-terrorism unit based at Fort Bragg. He returned from Afghanistan in January, officials said. The couple's three children were in Ohio visiting relatives at the time of the deaths.

Women who cheat on their husbands while they are deployed in a cz would be smart to leave town before they come home.

Man! I was doin' pretty good this morning til I read this! Lord God Almighty have we absolutely lost our minds in this country? My guess is there was big big trouble in each marriage before the troopers deployed. And the deployment took them over the edge.

For God sake people go to a marriage counselor, pastor, someone to help you or get the heck gone from each other if you can't get along before someone gets killed!

Angry Anger Management

I once had a young man assigned to counseling and work release for beating up on a guy who had been sleeping with his girl.

I said, "You should be grateful that you caught them before you got married." Better before marriage than after. Not a reason for anger but a reason for gratitude, you found out the true character of the girl before you got married.

Too bad, anger solves nothing in these cases. Maybe the military should provide counseling on the what if's and how to handle them before they are shipped home.

We had a young man from Boston come and visit the Chaplain at Devens. Seems that his wife was eight months pregnant when he came home from Nam, he'd been in Nam a year. I told him it was his choice. Divorce, reconciliation (much, much counseling), or get mad and do something really stupid. I never saw him again but my heart sure went out to him.

In a society that promotes promiscousness should we be surprised! Its just another soap opera isn't! We shouldn't be surprised! Help us to develop a sensible value system before its too late.

Default Nothing new here.

When I was at Bragg during the Vietnam years there were a lot of guys who got home and found somebody else's shoes under their beds with the same predictable results. Since most of it happened off post in the Spring Lake Trailer parks, it just didn't make national news. I don't think that this is stress at work (at least not stress from Afghanicsan) but other issues that no amount of counseling is going to prevent.

Default There has to be something!

These exceptionally highly trained and intelligent soldiers can have very fragile egos, common among high achievers.
These statistics I would assume (never saw any) would be higher than the national average. I would think that if you prepare for what might happen and train their reaction in advance you might curb some of the violence. Certainly not all but at least some of it.

Default Terrible

I watch the news CNN and Local each and every morning and I havent read or heard a thing until now about this situation.

Just what is wrong with these people nowadays?

I always hear about the woman especiallly doing the own kids in, but somewhere along the road the man had something to do with it also.

Is the stress of every day working and doing your job getting to the regular divorce instead of down right murder,

I worked all my life and missed my kids growing up, but they had a good life. I got out of there life quite a time ago and sorry about it, but I didnt go POSTAL or LAKE ( I only live about two minutes away from Lake Ray Raberts ).

The military is a good living if you ask me.

I could put on the humor part now and say that the Tragic things that are happening is going to make a country singer very rich.

Sorry about that.

enough................

Not all the situations are wives cheating but i'm not surprised that is what the assumption is even though the article doesn't tell us that. Some wives can't take the stress of the abuse of the husband coming home acting like Mr. bad ass after the deployment and taking all his green beret shit out on her and sometimes she wants out...did anyone think some of these green beret egos don't take no for an answer? From one who knew one.

Default Just what now

I finally got the news on the tube

Just what now about the 9 children left behind???

TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your plans are to get married ( or shack up) BOTH have to bare the responsibilities.

I just mainly feel deep inside that somewhere along the road that the military is not responsible.

It is not PTDS (sp)

Go and spend one whole tour ( 1 yr ) in Nam/ Korea/ WWi WWii and then come back.

Hey man/women, we are only Human.

Do what you have to do and get back to your loved ones and go from there,

(True Story ):

When I was in Nam (three tours) + I sent my girl a letter written on a roll of ass wipe. Nothing wrong with that cause she sent me a Dear Doug letter that said she was dating my best friend. But in one ear out the other. I had me a little girl (vietnamese) (sp) and having fun on the side also.

But to come home and start killing!!!!!! Stupid!!!!!

Just THANK GOD THE KIDS WERENT WITH THEM (killed).

But now what about the children?? Is the govt going to take care of them? Grandparents or what?

Think about it seriously before you answer this reply.

enough....................

Default There has to be a better way.

They just don't think. Get caught up in the moment. The permanent damage done to the children, their families at home, etc. It just makes you wonder what people are thinking. What a waste of humanity! E-6's and E-7's older mature guys that should know better.
