LANCE CPL. JEFFREY ROSS
Two Yuma-based Marines and two soldiers assigned to Yuma Proving Ground were honored Friday for exemplary service by the Yuma County Chamber of Commerce's Military Affairs Committee.

Plaques were presented Friday to the four during the Caballeros de Yuma's Independence Day flag-raising ceremony at Caballero Park.

Receiving the Marine Corps Air Station's Marine of the Quarter for the period of January through March was Lance Cpl. Jeffrey M. Ross. Cpl. Ryan R. Stogner was honored as Non-commissioned Officer of the Quarter for the same period at MCAS.

Sgt. Christopher A. Hooks was Non-commissioned Officer of the Year for 2003 at YPG, while Spc. Bertha K. Kabuye is the Soldier of the Year for YPG for 2003.

Selection committees at the two Yuma bases choose recipients for the awards based on various criteria, among them exemplary service in the military, said Russ Baas, chairman of the military affairs committee.

Hook joined the Army in 1993 and received training as an administrative specialist. His assignments have included Germany, Bosnia, Fort McClellan in Alabama and Fort Leonardwood in Missouri, and Camp Coiner in Korea.

He is currently assigned as the personnel service non-commissioned officer at YPG. His long-term goal is to retire as a senior non-commissioned officer and earn a bachelor's degree. He is married to Shela and they have one son.

Kabuye, a native of Georgia, enlisted in the Army 2002, attended basic training at Fort Leonardwood and advanced training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Her military occupational specialty is patient administration. She is married and has three children.

Ross is a military working dog handler at MCAS. He has been at MCAS since August.

Stogner, assigned to MCAS since August 2000, is an operations military policeman.
