CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.(Oct. 20, 2003) -- For the third time in four years, 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion was selected as the co-recipient of the Marine Corps Combat Engineer Battalion of the Year Award from the Marine Corps Engineer Association. They, along with their west-coast brethren 1st CEB at Camp Pendleton, co-received the award during a ceremony Oct. 2nd in Harrisburg, Pa.

The two battalions received the award for their efforts as Combined Combat Engineer Battalion during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Brigadier Gen. Edward G. Usher, former commanding general of 1st Force Service Support Group at Camp Pendelton, presented the award the to the commanding officer of 2nd CEB and the executive officer of 1st CEB. The ceremony took place at the end of the MCEA two-day conference.

Every year the Marine Corps Engineer Association recognizes the best performing battalions and individuals within each aspect of the Corps' engineering field.

This year Lt. Col. Michael A. Micucci, commanding officer of 2nd CEB accepted the award, along with Maj. Michael Jernigan, executive officer of 1st CEB on behalf of their units.

"Although I accepted the award for the battalion, it was the Marines and sailors that earned this award," said Micucci when talking about 2nd CEB.

The award is not only given because of the actions during Operation Iraqi Freedom, it's also for the Marines and sailors from 2nd CEB who were attached to Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa or a Marine Expeditionary Unit during the last year, said Micucci.

"I'm very proud of all the Marines and sailors in the battalion. This award really represents the quality of support they all have given to the Marine Corps in the past year," said Micucci. "The award is theirs, they earned it."

Lieutenant Col. Michael A. Micucci (left) and Maj. Michael Jernigan, respectively the commanding officer and executive officer of both east and west coast combat engineer battalions, recently co-accepted the award for the Marine Corps Engineer Association's best combat engineer battalion Oct. 2 in Harrisburg, Pa. The award was presented to both 1st and 2nd CEB for their joint efforts as Combined Combat Engineer Battalion during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
