Default I need some help with WOODWORKING!

Hopefully we have some folks in here that do things with wood.

I just bought an artist's easel (for displaying framed pictures) on the internet. It is made of unfinished hemlock.

One of the legs (about 36"long by 1/2" square) is warped. When laid flat is has about a 1 inch bow in it.

Is there a way to straighten it? I have some C clamps.

Thanks in advance!

Default You`ve Come To the Right Place

Woodworking has been my life.
Hemlock..the root of your problem,is almost impossible to keep straight.Assuming that you don`t have a steam box at your disposal, what I would do is wet a towell in very hot water, wring it out,and wrap the piece in it.Set up a simple jig with 3 pegs in a board, the middle one being slightly out of line, and bend the stick about 1/2" in the opposite way it is now crowned and let it cool that way. After it cools and dries, treat it liberally with linseed oil.No guarentee..but it`s what I`d do.Good luck.

Question STEVE

Why not just make another one? Hemlock is same-same white fir. We used to mix them in the lumber mill. If you can't find either one, Ponderosa pine will work. Check out Home Depot.

Smile It worked!!

It's not PERFECTLY straight now, but ya gotta look twice to see it. It's serviceable. Now, I'll get a coat of something clear on it to keep the moisture out and we'll be good to go.

Noch einmal...vielen Dank!!!

Phuloi,

One thing I learned (the hard way) about linseed oil is to used boiled, not raw, oil. I once used raw linseed oil on my musket stock and after a few days I found mold growing on it. I switched to boiled oil and haven't had a problem since.

What Griz said, with this one caveat... depending on from where the wood came and to where it went, there is an unusually high probable differential between wood types and relative humidity... which means, the Gruz solution would usually work, but might find resistance if the differential between saturated relative humidity at the place of origin and the place of current reside is extreme.

Maybe doesn't mean much, but in museum work I have seen some truly amazing checks in wood, over a very short period of time due to this.

Just a thought...
