A bit late, but...

50 years ago:

May 7th, 1954 marked the fall of Dien Bien Phu. "Cest fini?" asked the Viet Minh soldier. "Oui, c'est fini" responded Major Jean Nicolas, commander of one of the last French strongholds, as a white flag appeared over his trench.

May 8th, 1954 marked the opening of the Geneva Conference.
