Default Christmas Cheer?

Okay, all you home-made bartenders out there...I'm interested in knowing what your favorite "poison" is for adding the "cheer" to egg nog.

I guess rum, brandy, and whiskey are some favorites.

Also looking for traditional add-ins.

RevDoc...did folks do egg nog at Christmas during the Revolution?
What did they add to give it, well, you know...warmth?

Steve
Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. Makes the warm, warmer.

Heres another recipe for homemade Baileys if you or anyone else is interested;

3/4 C. whiskey (Seagrams or eq.)
1/4 C. brown cream de cocoa
1 C. heavy cream (for dieters, half and half and milk will work)
1 can sweetened condensed milk
2 tbls. chocolate syrup
1 tsp. coconut extract
Whiz in blender, pour over ice and serve

The alcohol is changable. I've used a mix of rum and chimes or other whiskeys. They all work and catch up with you.

Steve,

Being a Paratrooper the way I make egg nog is to use a hypo, inject an egg with Kettle One Vodka, then suck the egg dry. Call them PACO'S EGG NOG SHOOTERS. Try one or six.

Rigger,

The term "egg nog" really wasn't used until the 19th century. In "my" time, it was called "egg flip". It was made with eggs, milk, sugar, and brandy or Madeira or sherry or rum. It was an upper class holiday drink in England because the common folk couldn't afford the ingredients, especially city dwelling commoners. Back then, once they were weaned, they very rarely got any fresh milk.

The preferred, and more affordable, drink for the holidays in America were any manner of punch which included copious amounts of alcohol, especially ales and rum. Longfellow's Wayside Inn in Sudbury, MA makes a delicious "Innkeeper's Punch" made with rum, dark ale, brown sugar, and lemons and oranges. GOOD STUFF!!

Also, Christmas wasn't the big day of celebration. Back then they preferred to celebrate 12th Night (The Epiphany), the day the 3 Wise Men gave gifts to the Child. Christmas Day, itself, was considered to be a Papist holiday and therefore shunned in predominately Protestant America.

Lightbulb Try this one

The traditional French-Canadian egg nog. (wife is French-Canadian)

Make a bowl of traditional New England egg nog and pour into an 8 oz. glass. Next pour a 4 oz. shot of Napoleon Courvoisier. Then drink the brandy and find a kid to give the nog to.

Milk and eggs in good hard liquor? Isn't that something like putting pepper on your apple pie?

Stay healthy,
Andy

Round here we call it egg nod.
Fill a glass with Jack Daniels
Place an egg on the table
Drink the whiskey
Nod to the egg
Repeat as necessary.
