Flare ship
We called for a flare ship and a couple hours later this C-130 shows up and wants a fix on where to drop his flares. ITs night, Our LT told one of the guys to fire a hand held flare. And reported to the C-130. All of a sudden it was day light, they dropped about 3 at one tome. and kept dropping them all night. One of the shoots landed in our area, it was about 12 in diamiter. I sent it home.
Man those things make a lot of light. The only thing I didn't care for about the whole thing was that we couldn't get any Arty or even mortars while they were flying around us. Ron |

Nope, that's the big drawback of a flare ship. I'm surprised an arty unit couldn't give you illumination.

time
It was a matter of how long the illumination was there and how bright. Arty shells only last a few min. the things from the flare ship lasted for about 10-15 min each. Also the arty shell illuminated about a football field the flare ship flares illuminated about 5 times that.
