Jarhead
I am a junior at Illinois State University and I just finished reading the book Jarhead by Anthony Wofford. I think the book was a lot like the movie that was recently made and released. It is about a boy (Anthony Wofford) who was stationed in Iraq and became a sniper Jarhead. Even though he didn't come into that much combat, the war still affected him greatly. I never realized that even though someone wasn't on the front line, they too were changed after they came back from the war. I think it was cool learning about things from a real person's perspective about what happened out there in the desert and not a fictional story. Anyone who has read the book, would you like to discuss it?

I thought the book was good. I had a friend come back from Iraq and he was never the same. the effects of his experiences were long term. No matter what the war or conflict, the soldiers are put under great emotional distress. He feels that his depression was caused by the war and is still receiving mental health care. He is bargaining with the veterans administration trying to get them to provide more mental health care and disability payments. The books author seemed to have alot of down time and talked about all of the drinking that they did. I did not like the fact that our soldiers were drinking all of the time during serious occasions. The movie was pretty good.

First , welcome second, the movie was just stupid. the guy never saw any "Action", somehow we are to believe that this is a bad thing? My daughter told me to go see it, after the movie I went to see my daughter. "What is wrong with you" that movie sucked. I guess, If, You are a Marine, and, your life is built around the need for combat, then the movie would make some sense. But people that are in the military are not like that, In the Army that is. If I went threw 3 years in the Army and never fired my weapon, that would be a "WINNER" to me. Killing a human is not a 16MM movie moment. It will stay and haunt you the rest of your life. Finish School, become a Marine, (Our country needs you) but leave the "I'm a killer" with the news paper boy. cause unless you are a homicidal maniac, Killing a human will bother you. By the way, a homicidal maniac is the best person to be in combat with, (they don't hesitate) but you wouldn't want to live next door to him. Ron |
